Joe began coaching soccer and goalkeepers in 1995 in South Texas.

Joe has played professional soccer for the Houston Hurricanes, the Texas Toros, and the Texas Rattlers. In 1999 Joe was invited into the Dallas Burn Pro player combine, entered into the 1999 MLS Superdraft, then invited to train day to day with the Dallas Burn organization (now FC Dallas), as he played games with their minor league teams in both 1999 and 2000. He was then again invited into preseason with the Dallas Burn in the 2001 season with new Head Coach Mike Jeffries. 

Joe graduated from Baylor University in 1994, and has worked in soccer ever since. He began coaching in 1995 as goalkeeper and team coach for the Katy Strikers (now Albion Hurricanes FC West) outside of Houston, Texas. Along the way, Joe has worked as goalkeeper evaluator for South Texas state teams in the '82, '84, and '85 birth years. In the spring of 1998, Joe coached the '84 girls South Texas ODP state team. He spent four years in Houston, coaching teams and goalkeepers for the Strikers and ODP until moving to Dallas in 1999.

From 2001 – 2010 Joe worked as the head goalkeeper coach for North Texas Soccer in the Olympic Development Program working with every age for the boys and girls state teams. Since 2000, Joe has worked for youth clubs in North Texas.

In 2009 Joe worked on regional staff as a goalkeeper coach for Region 3 ODP with the 96 girl’s age group. In 2012 and 2013 Joe was again on regional staff with the 99 girls and the 95 girls as well as the goalkeeper coach for the 97 and 98 girl’s teams. Joe also coached the goalkeepers at the North Texas location of the US Soccer National Team training centers during the 2011 – 2014 calendar years.

Joe has been a clinician for North Texas, educating team and individual coaches on training their goalkeepers. He has taught the goalkeeper portion of many of the E, D, and C clinics in North Texas. Joe has also led instruction at the Annual General Meeting for North Texas, the SMU Soccer Coaches Clinic, the Schellas Hyndman Coaching Clinics, and led goalkeeper education programs for recreational associations and competitive clubs in North and South Texas.

From 2007 - 2012 Joe worked as an assistant/GK coach for Southern Methodist University (SMU) Women's Soccer Team under Head Coach Brent Erwin. From 2012 - 2013, Joe remained on staff as an assistant/GK coach for the women's team at Southern Methodist University under head coach Chris Petrucelli. 

Joe began work in 2012 as an assistant coach for the men’s team at SMU under head coach Tim McClements and continued in that role with head coach Kevin Hudson. In his 4 seasons with the men’s team, he helped goalkeeper Jaime Ibarra to AAC (American Athletic Conference NCAA D1) Defensive MVP award and co-goalkeeper of the year in 2012 and goalkeeper Michael Nelson to back to back goalkeeper of the year awards in 2014 and 2015 including a pre-season All American selection prior to the 2016 season. The team won the regular season championship in both 2012 and 2015, reaching the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament in 2015. He was a part of the AAC coaching staff of the year in 2015.

From 2014-2016 Joe worked with the University of Dallas women's program under the direction of head coach Angelina Pane. The University of Dallas goalkeeper was named SCAC (Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference NCAA D3) Newcomer of the year in 2014 then team MVP and SCAC Defensive Player of the year in 2015. 

From 2016 – 2017 Joe was responsible for leading goalkeeping education and team and players camps and additional training programs for Liverpool International Academy of America.  At the beginning of 2018, Joe moved to the Phoenix area to work with Real Salt Lake Arizona.

He received a national "C" coaching license in 1997.
